As part of the Dubai Design Week that is taking place from the 13th to the 18th of November 2017, the College of Design at the American University in the Emirates, organized the 3rd International Design Conference under the title of “Design in a Digital World”, that tackled the recent trends and challenges that influences the design field; on Monday, Nov,13, 2017 on campus.

Professor Muthanna Abdul Razzaq, President of the university, inaugurated the conference by welcoming the attendees who came from different parts of the world including Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, and India in addition to the faculty, students, and admin of the university. Pro. Abdul Razzaq praised the initiative and considered it to be a creative opportunity for all students and attendees. He proceeds to highlight the achievements of the students focusing on the Underwater Fashion Show which he views as a very successful event and an example of how creativity shapes the university’s practical work.

The conference commenced with Prof. Michael Krohn from Zurich University of the Arts of Switzerland, who is much interested in solving future design challenges with a scientific approach. Pro. Krohn who was fascinated with the history of objects and how each object has it’s own background and function, discussed his views concerning digitalization and culture and how digitalization is slowly erasing the identities of objects adding how people are more interested in the simplicity of the function of a certain object rather than the design of it from the outside.

Prof. Micheal reflected his views and opinion regarding the educational aspects and how students are being educated for jobs that do not exist at the moments but will be present in the near future. “No matter where you are in the world, the result is always the same: everybody wears the same sneakers” Pro. Krohn said regarding the disadvantages that technology and digitalization have brought to the design field.

Following into that, Mr. Talik Chalabi from Chalabi Architekten & Partner ZT GmbH Austria, fascinated the attendees with his outstanding projects which particularly featured the Sheikh Zayed learning center in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. Mr. Chalabi had an interesting view of his projects, he believed that each region should have an architecture that is inspired by the culture and natural environment of it. For the Sheikh Zayed learning center, he wanted to create something that represented the dessert in a way, which is, in this case, burrowing animals and their underground holes, and that is why his architecture was partly underground. He also used colors and natural lighting, and ancient methods of cooling down the sustainable building.

Another speaker who presented a chain of impressive ideas was Prof. Douglas Stanley from the Geneva Art School in Switzerland, who shared with attendees a number of projects that he has done with his students under the name of Salon. ” We all play games, whether they’re electronic games or social game” Prof. Stanely said. He perceived games as objects of distraction that take the human mind to another world, to a different creative world.

Other presentations took place in the auditorium which practitioners, students, and faculty & admin of the university attended. The presentations discussed the process of infusing technologies in different domains and disciplines of design to create something innovative that makes people see, think and react.

Students from the American University in the Emirates who are enrolled in the course of Natural Sciences, organized a science exhibition to showcase their final project. The initiative came as an opportunity for the students to unleash their creative minds and have the freedom to apply whatever they learned in the classroom to an actual science project that the university and the society can both benefit from. The exhibition showcased a number of new and innovative ideas that were implemented by students, all of the ideas and projects were out of the box and reflected that nothing is impossible in the AUE.

The exhibition was inaugurated with the presence of two guest speakers who both supported the theme of the exhibition. Mrs. Seta Tutundjan who is the director of partnership & knowledge management at ICBA, discussed the importance of including women especially into agriculture, because it’s a domain that deals with the environment directly and can have a positive effect on the development of better sustainable countries. Mr. Ravi Raman, Senior Vice President of AL Khaleej times, reflected his own life experience that helped him get where he is today. Mr. Ravi encourage the students to not give up on their ideas and project, and pursue what they believe in, even if they faced some difficulties in their way.

The exhibition was an opportunity for students to stand in front of their peers and professors, and president their innovative ideas which was the case with Abdullah Hussein and Faiq Shafqat, who both introduced the audience to the importance of sustainability and how it affects our current time. Through the research and surveys that they conducted, they found out that most students are aware of the importance of stopping pollution and supporting sustainability, but no one actually took any action towards the issue, and that is what the presentation was all about; to influence their fellow students and even their professors to take a step towards a more sustainable environment no matter how small the action might be.

The exhibition showcased a various number of science projects done by students in different fields including forensics, physical health and more. The initiative aimed to fill the gap between theory and practice, and the students were successful in using their knowledge into something bigger which is in this case, creating ideas that can be used in the society in different fields.

Students of the College of Media and Mass Communication (CMMC) took part in a workshop on documentary filmmaking, where they had the chance to learn the most current trends and developments in their field, making them headfirst ready within their field of work.

Adil Matin from Vesus Media conducted a special documentary filmmaking workshop for the students of the American University in the Emirates (AUE), where he bought his extensive knowledge on the different types of documentary forms that connote various meanings and suit every particular documentary style.

He stressed that at first CMMC students considering to make filmmaking as a career option need first to understand the constant developments of audiovisual technology and how this will enhance and change their work. Taking into account the latest trend of shooting film on mobile phones, he made it clear that students should be weary of the HD tag as he stated “This is simply put out there for marketing purposes, because the truth is you’re only shooting in widescreen.” Today’s real HD cameras range from $2,000 to $50,000 and cannot fit in your back pocket.

Students were eager to find out the research process of a documentary film, as budding future broadcast journalists and filmmakers. Depending on the length and subject, it all varies, yet the effort remains no less than other mediums, such as that of writing a book.

The workshop included a clips video of the most famous documentaries, that have won worldwide recognition and through this CMMC students were able to understand that documentary filmmaking can take any subject and delve to analyse it. Although Adil Matin was quick to point out that documentaries are not always necessarily about negative aspects of life that require social change, “Documentaries can be about development, such as those made for Expo 2020. Documentary is everyday life.”

CMMC students came away with a plethora of knowledge, beaming with new ideas for their upcoming projects.

The American University in the Emirates (AUE) celebrated Global day by hosting an event on campus, which saw 15 Middle Eastern countries represented with cultural tents, theatrical plays, dancing performances and standup comedy, keeping the theme of togetherness alive.

AUE boasts a multicultural studentship that showcased the proudness of their origins through inventive tents filled with a full education of different countries. As such, the Emirati tent, which emphasized the Bedouin roots and flavoursome cuisine, included demonstrations of the progression the country has accomplished within the past 30 years through architectural designs.

Integrated in a day of awareness was a platform of performances by each of the 15 participating countries, from folkloric dancing from the Levant and Gulf and a theatrical moving play from Palestine to several comedians and singers.

Although divided by borders, AUE students were seen gracefully teaching one another the steps of their dances and feeding each other food from each tent, showing the tolerance, acceptance and love for each other.

Each tent was themed differently to show the large turnout of attendees the best from each country. Egypt decided to focus on the celebrity enticed classic period of the 1950’s, whereas Iran was sticking to the authentic food and ancient instruments and Iraq built a makeshift copy of the Martyr’s Memorial, famously known as the Al-Shaheed Monument in Baghdad.

A surprise visit included a star appearance from the Egyptian comedian, Ashraf Abdel Baqi, who congratulated AUE students on expressing their love for their countries through music, art and theatre. Star struck students were able to further their excitement of the day by requesting more music from each country.

The importance of Global Day in the United Arab Emirates is eminent on a day-to-day basis as it is a cosmopolitan country, acceptant and welcoming of all nationalities. This was shown at AUE Global Day through a special singing performance that simultaneously incorporated snippets of well-known songs into one song, resulting in students of all the participating nationalities join in in a sing-along and dance.

Global Day is one of the most popular events of the year at AUE, seeing students prepare months in advance to make sure all countries are represented with the optimum of uniqueness.
