Prof. Muthanna Ghani Abdul Razzaq: The vision of the American University in the Emirates (AUE) aims to continuously graduate innovative and influential leaders in society.

Dubai – the American University in the Emirates
    30 October 2021

The “Future Innovation Summit” was held in “Dubai Festival City” under the patronage and presence of His Highness Sheikh Saqr bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, and in the presence of His Excellency Mirza Al Sayegh, Deputy Chairman of the AUE’s Board of Trustees, and His Excellency Khalaf Saghir Al Qubaisi, Member of the AUE’s Board of Trustees.

With participation of five students and alumni from the AUE’s College of Information Technology (CCIT) took part, the projects demonstrate the extent of the potentials enjoyed by the University students in terms of support, attention and follow-up. The Summit’s organizers highly praised the five participants, who were all honoured on the Summit’s last day, which was attended by specialists and consultants from various Arab and international countries. During the Summit, the AUE was given a special award for the excellence of its students’ projects.

Prof. Muthanna Ghani Abdul Razzaq, President of the AUE, received the university’s award in the presence of Prof. William Cornwell, Provost of the AUE, based on the fact that the University presented during the Summit student models with innovative projects that received approval and praise from the participating delegations from various sides.

During the honour ceremony, Prof. Muthanna Ghani Abdul Razzaq, President of AUE said that “the innovative projects by the participating University students during the ‘Future Innovation Summit’ are the first fruits of the ‘AUE Startup Incubator’ Programme that was launched by the University to support its affiliates and those enrolled in graduate studies. This Programme aims to assist in the design and execution of startup initiatives that are appropriate for the market, the era, and the future.”

He emphasized that the AUE’s vision is determined to promote innovative student projects with the goal of graduating creative and influential leaders in society armed with knowledge and experience in the field of innovation. “This would allow them to uncover ideas, ambitions, and future objectives for their startup initiatives, as well as conquer key difficulties to achieve success and excellence at the level of planning or presenting such initiatives to the market in an orderly manner.”

The “Future Innovation Summit” was organized by Sheikh Saqr Al Qasimi Group of Companies, with the interest of Sheikh Saqr Al Qasimi himself, who is one of the symbols that graduated from the AUE, and still represents a role model for many students and graduates of the University, due to his prominent fingerprints in the field of innovation and planning for future projects, as well as spreading the culture of entrepreneurship in the United Arab Emirates.

During the Future Innovation Summit, these projects ranged across many disciplines. They were presented optimally under the practical training and pedagogical supervision of Dr. Ahmed Nofal Al-Masry and Dr. Rasha Almajed from the AUE’s Innovation Lab Department, who provided the students with assistance and encouragement to make their initiatives a success.

During their visit and examination of the projects, AUE’s officials acknowledged their delight in the students’ accomplishments. They also promised to help the students and those who will follow in their footsteps in whatever way they could.

These five projects reflected AUE students’ skills at the level of future planning and readiness through startup initiatives that are up to date, applicable, and compatible with the UAE’s future vision, which aims to prepare a generation capable of innovation, expansion, and diversification of development horizons. These are the same beliefs that the University aims to instil in its students.

The AUE launched the “Startup Incubator” Programme to assist its students and graduates who wish to establish their own startup companies, as well as to improve their transition to work within the economy based on innovation, knowledge, and future-oriented by raising their awareness of entrepreneurship in various economic sectors.

  • Innovation is the foundation of the knowledge economy

Innovation is the foundation of the knowledge economy

    By: Dr. Najat AlSaied
A researcher in political media-Assistant Professor at CMMC

It seems to any follower of what is happening in the UAE that it is a country that operates like a beehive; as one event ends others emerge. For example, the Future Innovation Summit took place from October 13 to 14 in Dubai and on October 20, the Annual Forum of Al-Ittihad newspaper was held in Abu Dhabi under the title: “Economic development… The locomotive of stability and civilizational contribution.”

Both events touched on several important points, the most important of which is the creation of a new generation armed with knowledge of advanced sciences and innovation to build a strong knowledge economy. The Future Innovation Summit was organized under the auspices of The Private Office of Sheikh Saqer Bin Mohamed Al Qasimi. Sheikh Saqer Bin Mohamed Al Qasimi stated that this Summit reflects the country’s 2040 vision because it focuses on the development of sectors of interest to the state, such as healthcare, education, artificial intelligence, etc.

That is why the Summit brought together leading professionals and leading companies from these industries under one roof. Professor Muthanna Abdul Razzaq, President and CEO of the American University in the Emirates, also explained in the panel discussion, “A Paradigm Shift in Learning due to the Pandemic”, that the university’s programs have been transformed to meet current pandemic-influenced market requirements. He also indicated that one of the success stories to have emerged is that Sheikh Saqer Bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, one of the American University’s graduates, is now a member of the Board of Trustees, thanks to his support for development and innovation.

Developing education and attracting talent are what Hamad Al Kaabi, editor-in-chief of Al-Ittihad newspaper, emphasized in his speech at the Forum. He highlighted that the newspaper continuously, each and every day, creates content that highlights what innovative people can offer, especially young people in the field of artificial intelligence and innovation in order to contribute to the creation of the knowledge economy.

The Forum demonstrated the importance of advanced science to young people in a panel titled “Knowledge Economy and Promoting Innovation,” showcasing the innovations of a medical student, Mohammed Al Hashemi, and Fatima Al Kaabi, who has several inventions and is currently specializing in computer science and completing her studies in the United States.

The significance of advanced science to students was also present during the Future Innovation Summit Exhibition, where the students of the American University in the Emirates talked about their innovations. For example, Ahmed Atallah has created “gamification”, which is about transforming academic tasks into competitive games, while Sarah Mohammed has created a security system that relies on fingerprint identification when entering the gates of government agencies.

The most important thing we can deduct from these two crucial activities is that the UAE is well underway with developing a knowledge economy, but in order to move forward, a creative and innovative generation must be nurtured, and the media must be supportive of this trend.

The winners’ designs will now be part of The Zay Initiative’s permanent collection online, where they collect, document, conserve and exhibit traditional Emirati attire and their stories for global viewing.
Marwa found her inspiration from the Indigo hotel, which is a mix of modernity and the past, and also in the traditional Emirati elements of the desert rose and lantern. The highlight of her black are the side panels which were created in applique technique with vibrant colors and varied fabrics and outlined with beads. The lantern-inspired sleeves were crafted from black organza with a touch of gold and agal.
Sauda’s outfit, titled ‘Ardawb’ (short for Arabian Modern Thawb) was inspired from the UAE culture such as Al Sadu fabric and Talli lace along with the Burqa worn traditionally by Bedouin women in the Emirati Society. The garment emphasizes the 4 colors of the UAE flag, with white as an overall color for the coat to symbolize the rich pearl diving history and the peace and harmony between various cultures that live in UAE. Among the contemporary elements, the collar was created to symbolize the strength and empowerment of Arabian women.
